Suffering From Depression, Stress, Or Anxiety - 10 Plants You Need To Grow

plants for eating and aromatherapy.

EMILY MAIN

Just being outside, whether you’re gardening, exercising, or simply taking a stroll, is a great mood booster. But getting your hands dirty in the garden is so effective at combating depression, stress, and anxiety that it’s often used in “horticultural therapy” at psychiatric hospitals.
So if you feel like your energy levels are dropping or you’re just too stressed out at work, plant yourself a good-mood garden. You'll not only get the benefits of a little garden therapy, but you'll benefit from the mood-boosting nutrients present these healthy foods, too. Turns out, certain vegetables and herbs are rich in antidepressant compounds and minerals that can take the edge off a bad day and even help alleviate full-blown depression.
Here’s a guide to get you started—10 of the most potent antidepressant foods and herbs, and how to grow them anywhere.

SWISS CHARD

Swiss Chard

EAT

All types of chard are packed with magnesium, a nutrient essential for the biochemical reactions in the brain that boost your energy levels. In fact, magnesium deficiency is a common condition among people diagnosed with clinical depression.

GROW

Chard is a hardy crop that, if planted even as late as summer, will produce until early winter. Pick a spot that gets a fair amount of sunlight; it can tolerate shade but produces best with lots of sun. Or choose a container that's about 12 inches wide and 12 inches deep and fill it with a good all-purpose organic potting soil. Sow between 2 and 3 seeds per pot. You can start harvesting leaves as soon as they appear, but harvest from the outside so as not to kill the entire plant.

Blue Potatoes

Blue Potatoes

EAT

The anthocyanin antioxidants in rare—but tasty!—blue potatoes reduce inflammation that can lead to bad moods. Their skin is also packed with iodine, which helps stabilize thyroid hormone levels, thus warding off mood swings.

GROW

Potatoes are about the easiest crops to grow. You can even grow them in a bag of potting soil, without really dirtying your hands. To do that, cut a few drainage holes at the bottom of a bag of potting soil, then stand the bag someplace sunny. Bury two "seed potatoes" (you can buy them from Wood Prairie Farms) about 4 inches deep, and wait about 3 months for them to grow. When flowers start to appear, tip the bag over and dig out the potatoes. To keep the harvest going long into the fall, plant a new set of seed potatoes every few weeks.

Cherry Tomatoes

Cherry Tomatoes

EAT

Tomato skin is rich in lycopene, a phytonutrient that actually stops the buildup of pro-inflammatory compounds linked to depression. Because lycopene lives in tomato skins, the best way to get it is through cherry tomatoes, whose smaller surface area means you'll eat more skin than if you eat a full-size tomato.

GROW

Cherry tomatoes are good choices for containers, and they'll produce more fruit than larger varieties. The pots should be large—one that holds 4 to 6 gallons of potting soil will do—and placed in a sunny spot. In June, find some organic cherry-tomato seedlings at a local nursery or farmers’ market (big-box-store tomato plants can be very disease-prone), and plant them so that the first row of leaves is covered by dirt. Depending on the variety you grow, cherry tomatoes can take about 2 to 3 months to start bearing fruit.

Black Eyed Peas

Black Eyed Peas

EAT

Black-eyed peas have some of the highest levels of folate of any vegetable. It’s thought that folate plays a role in creating dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, three brain chemicals that, when absent, can make you forgetful, irritable, and unable to sleep.

GROW

Black-eyed peas need long summers with temperatures averaging between 60° and 70°F, which is why they're so commonly grown down South. They need warm days and warm nights, with lots of sun and water. After you plant them, they'll be ready to harvest in a little over three months. You can eat them fresh off the vine, or leave them on the vine until they dry (you'll hear seeds rattling around in the pods) and save them to eat all winter.

Oregano

Oregano

EAT

Oregano is rich in caffeic acid, quercitin, and rosmarinic acid, all components that combat depression, fatigue, and anxiety.

GROW

Oregano, like most herbs, is easy to grow. Look for a seedling at a local nursery, pot it, and just water as needed, leaving the soil on the dry side. It thrives better in containers, but make sure your pot is fairly large—at least 12 inches across—as this plant can grow pretty quickly.

Sunflowers

6/10 PORTLAND PRESS HERALD/ GETTY
Sunflowers

EAT

Sunflower seeds are a great source for the antidepressant phenylalanine, an amino acid the body turns into norepinephrine.

GROW

Sunflowers like sun, obviously, but be sure to plant them in a sunny spot on the north edge of your yard or garden so they don’t cast too much shade on other sun-loving plants. Plant your seeds after the last frost. Towards the end of summer, the flowers start to wilt and the seed heads ripen and droop. When the seeds in the seed heads start to turn brown, cut them along with 2 feet of stem and hang upside down in a dry, well-ventilated place, such as a garage or attic, until fully dry; store in plastic bags for birds and animal food. To eat, soak overnight in water (or strong salt water, if a salty flavor is desired), drain, spread on a shallow baking sheet, and roast for 3 hours at 200°F or until crisp.

Chamomile

Chamomile

DRINK

There’s a reason a cup of chamomile tea just before bed helps you sleep. (Chamomile is one of these 8 foods that help you fall asleep fast.) Just like oregano, it’s rich in stress-reducing caffeic acid and quercitin, but it tastes much better in the form of tea, which you can make from your garden herbs by steeping chamomile flowers in boiling water for about 10 minutes.

GROW

German chamomile is best for teas, as opposed to other varieties that can taste bitter. Since it can grow wild and take over your garden, it’s best suited for containers. A small container about 6 inches wide by 6 inches deep will suffice, but a bigger pot will yield a bigger harvest. It prefers full sun and should be planted in late spring, when there’s no risk for frost.

Evening Primrose

Evening Primrose

EAT

Evening primrose is technically a wildflower. Its seeds have the highest levels of tryptophan (which your body uses to make mood-boosting serotonin) of any plant. In the fall, when the flowers mature, the flowers’ seed pods begin to fill up. Harvest a few and grind them as you would flaxseed into your favorite dishes.

GROW

Evening primrose is drought-tolerant and easy to grow either in containers or in the ground. You can find varieties with flowers ranging from deep reds to light yellows. Sow the seeds in groups of four. They’ll start to appear in 14 to 28 days.

Lavender

Lavender

SMELL

Gardens don’t have to be all about edibles (even though you can eat lavender). According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, aromatherapy treatments involving lavender and a few other herbs are often used to supplement depression treatments, because the scent is so relaxing.

GROW

Plant a lavender seedling in a container made from a material that breathes, such as terra-cotta, and choose a pot about 12 inches wide by 12 inches deep. Place your pot in an area that gets lots of sunlight; lavender loves dry, sunny areas. English lavender is both fragrant and edible, if you feel like adding some lavender flowers to your cooking.

St. John's Wort
St. John's Wort

St. John's Wort

DRINK

The most famous herbal antidepressant, St. John’s Wort contains compounds similar to those found in Prozac. The flowers and leaves are the most valuable part of the plant and can be brewed into a tea that will calm you down and boost your mood. Just note that St. John’s wort has many adverse drug interactions, so check with a pharmacist if you’re on any medications.

GROW

Another herb that’s often viewed as a weed, St. John’s Wort should be grown in containers to keep it from spreading where you don’t want it. It’s pretty easy to grow. Just find a seedling or some seeds and plant them in a small container placed in a partially sunny/partially shady area. Plant the herb in spring, and by July you’ll start to see leaves. But flowers won’t show up until the second year (St. John’s Wort is a perennial, so you can leave it in its pot all winter and it’ll grow back on its own).

A Conversation with Sherylynne L Rochester: God Send Me My Husband

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I definitely try to be original but mostly I make sure that the originality comes from the Holy Spirit. I hear what the Holy Spirit is saying and I write it. God really speaks through words and we see that with the Bible. God gives me the original story and I write it so that the reader can be changed, set freed, and delivered. All of my books are prophetic in nature and are definitely original.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
I would tell my younger writing self that you’re going to write a book and that book is going to sell 60,000 copies. Don’t get discouraged by the reviews or what people think about the cover. Keep writing because the most important thing is the message and making sure someone is introduced to Jesus Christ and comes into the kingdom of God.

Does your family support your career as a writer?
Absolutely. My family definitely support my writing career. They’ve been so supportive and helpful. My mom, she reads my books, tells me what I need to fix, and encourages me. My dad, he gives me new book ideas or titles. My fiancé, he discusses things with me when it comes to the topics of my books. My future family in law, they pray for me and tell me to keep writing. So, yes I have a huge ton of support.

What were you like at school?
At school, I was the quiet one, didn’t get into trouble, and stayed to myself. I went to Choir Academy of Harlem and sung with the Girls’ Choir of Harlem and so all we did was basically sing all day. If we had a year book, I would probably have been voted The Most Religious. I was into God. That was it.

Which writers inspire you?
The writers that inspire me the most are Frank Peretti, D. Brian Shafer, and Brad Meltzer. Frank Peretti and Brad Meltzer write thrillers. I love books that have you on the edge of your seat or books that make you think. Both authors do that. Then, D. Brian Shafer writes books about God, satan, Heaven, Hell, and the spiritual warfare aspect like Frank Peretti. When I write, I try to emulate them. I try to have fast past action, have readers on the edge of their seat, with nail-biting scenes. Most of all, I love to write about heaven, hell, angels, and demons to give it that spiritual warfare aspect. I definitely try to merge all of that with a prophetic message to the readers.

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?
The main character of my latest book, God Send Me My Husband, is Lailah. She’s a Christian who struggles with being single. What’s so special about her is that she relates to so many Christian single women. She’s 35 and not married and wonders when will God send her husband. It’s a question that so many single Christian women have. This was also a question I had before meeting my fiancé. In this book, you get to see how she deals with being single. You get to see her insecurities, her choices, and the consequences of not waiting on God.

What genre are your books?
My books are Christian Fiction. They usually fall under the Urban Christian Fiction or African American Christian fiction category.

So, what have you written?
I have written four books. The titles of the books I’ve written are: Altered Destiny: A Hustler’s Choice, Altered Destiny: Second Chance, Chronicles of A Vixen (Part 1), and God Send Me My Husband.

Where can we buy or see them?
You can buy my books on Amazon right now. It is available as a physical book and a digital book.

When did you decide to become a writer?
Well, writing runs in my family. My dad writes and has three books out. My mom is also a writer and will have a few coming out soon. I guess, it passed down to me. Writing wasn’t my first choice. Music was always my first choice but when I went to Five Towns College, my passion for writing grew in a magazine writing course. It wasn’t until 2009/2010 when I was working at Pearson Professional Centers that I started really writing. I was seeing people in Chicago and in Brooklyn dying and living a reckless life. So, during lunch time I went and brought a notebook and just started writing. Seeing the things happening in Chicago and Brooklyn prompted me to write about the street life and how the choices of living the street life could ultimately alter your destiny. So, my first book pushed me into becoming a writer. I love it.

The Ultimate Guide to Grocery Shopping with Grace Gillespie

Grace has been a fitness enthusiast for most of her life and has always believed in the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Her mission is to teach people to lead a healthy life and help them reach their goals.

Why do you write?
My Ultimate passion is helping others achieve their goals. So if I can help others achieve their goals, learn and apply new healthy habits and make “healthy” a lifestyle, then, i’ve achieved my goal and that is the EXACT reason that I write.

When did you decide to become a writer?
When I realized that I could get my message across to people without having to be present.

How much research do you do?
My whole life, past, present and future. I research daily and continue to learn more and more about people, actions, habits and the why’s and how’s of healthy living. I practice what I preach so it makes research not only fun but a second nature to me.

What’s your book about?
My book is about learning how to go grocery shopping for healthy food, make healthy choices and habits and learning how to read food labels so that you can set not only you up for success but your family as well.

So, what have you written?
This is my third book. My first book is about Mental Motivation. It’s 30 days to mentally prepare yourself for the body of your dreams. My second book is a Healthy cookbook. And this book, my third one is The Ultimate guide to Grocery shopping. All of these books are in my “Your Stop and Stare body” series.

I have also been writing health and fitness articles for various Fitness Magazines and Blogs for about 14 years now.

What made you so passionate about Health and Fitness?
Since the time I was 3 years old, I had such a passion for health and Fitness. My father was a Bodybuilder and my Brother and Nephew are both Pro Boxers. So I come from a very Health consciences family, which is why I feel that it is beyond important to reiterate the importance of a healthy lifestyle to our youth so that by the time we are adults, it is just second nature.

Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?
Yes, because EVERYONE is passionate about something. So, they just need to figure out where their passion lies and from there it’s just a piece of (sugar free) cake.  Their passion will lead the way and the words and ideas will continue to flow out. But, it has to be their true passion.

What is your writing Kryptonite?
My Kryptonite is hearing my readers and/or clients tell me how their lives have been changed since they read my book/books. And how they’ve implemented the changes in their lives.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?
It 100% energizes me to the extreme where I get so excited that sometimes I can’t sleep lol. I love spreading the word and teaching people habits, tips and tricks that can change their lives and make them not only healthier but happier as well.

Are you a full time Writer?
No, I own a gym and I’m a personal trainer, Fitness Nutritionist, Motivational Speaker, Fitness Model and an NPC Judge along with being an Author.  I love anything Health and Fitness related Lol

This book is available on Amazon.

Gaslighting: Know It and Identify It to Protect Yourself

Gaslighting: Know It and Identify It to Protect Yourself

Gaslighting is a manipulation tactic used to gain power. And it works too well.
Posted Jan 22, 2017

123rf Stock Photo/Standard License
Gaslighting is a tactic in which a person or entity, in order to gain more power, makes a victim question their reality. It works much better than you may think. Anyone is susceptible to gaslighting, and it is a common technique of abusers, dictators, narcissists, and cult leaders. It is done slowly, so the victim doesn't realize how much they've been brainwashed. For example, in the movie Gaslight (1944), a man manipulates his wife to the point where she thinks she is losing her mind.
People who gaslight typically use the following techniques:
1. They tell blatant lies.
You know it's an outright lie. Yet they are telling you this lie with a straight face. Why are they so blatant? Because they're setting up a precedent. Once they tell you a huge lie, you're not sure if anything they say is true. Keeping you unsteady and off-kilter is the goal.
2. They deny they ever said something, even though you have proof.
You know they said they would do something; you know you heard it. But they out and out deny it. It makes you start questioning your reality—maybe they never said that thing. And the more they do this, the more you question your reality and start accepting theirs.
3. They use what is near and dear to you as ammunition.
They know how important your kids are to you, and they know how important your identityis to you. So those may be one of the first things they attack. If you have kids, they tell you that you should not have had those children. They will tell you'd be a worthy person if only you didn't have a long list of negative traits. They attack the foundation of your being.
4. They wear you down over time.
This is one of the insidious things about gaslighting—it is done gradually, over time. A lie here, a lie there, a snide comment every so often...and then it starts ramping up. Even the brightest, most self-aware people can be sucked into gaslighting—it is that effective. It's the "frog in the frying pan" analogy: The heat is turned up slowly, so the frog never realizes what's happening to it.
5. Their actions do not match their words.
When dealing with a person or entity that gaslights, look at what they are doing rather than what they are sayingWhat they are saying means nothing; it is just talk. What they are doing is the issue.
6. They throw in positive reinforcement to confuse you.
This person or entity that is cutting you down, telling you that you don't have value, is now praising you for something you did. This adds an additional sense of uneasiness. You think, "Well maybe they aren't so bad." Yes, they are. This is a calculated attempt to keep you off-kilter—and again, to question your reality. Also look at what you were praised for; it is probably something that served the gaslighter.
7. They know confusion weakens people.
Gaslighters know that people like having a sense of stability and normalcy. Their goal is to uproot this and make you constantly question everything. And humans' natural tendency is to look to the person or entity that will help you feel more stable—and that happens to be the gaslighter.
8. They project.
They are a drug user or a cheater, yet they are constantly accusing you of that. This is done so often that you start trying to defend yourself, and are distracted from the gaslighter's own behavior.
9. They try to align people against you.
Gaslighters are masters at manipulating and finding the people they know will stand by them no matter what—and they use these people against you. They will make comments such as, "This person knows that you're not right," or "This person knows you're useless too." Keep in mind it does not mean that these people actually said these things. A gaslighter is a constant liar. When the gaslighter uses this tactic it makes you feel like you don't know who to trust or turn to—and that leads you right back to the gaslighter. And that's exactly what they want: Isolation gives them more control.
StockLite/Shutterstock
Source: StockLite/Shutterstock
10. They tell you or others that you are crazy.
This is one of the most effective tools of the gaslighter, because it's dismissive. The gaslighter knows if they question your sanity, people will not believe you when you tell them the gaslighter is abusive or out-of-control. It's a master technique.

11. They tell you everyone else is a liar.
By telling you that everyone else (your family, the media) is a liar, it again makes you question your reality. You've never known someone with the audacity to do this, so they must be telling the truth, right? No. It's a manipulation technique. It makes people turn to the gaslighter for the "correct" information—which isn't correct information at all.
The more you are aware of these techniques, the quicker you can identify them and avoid falling into the gaslighter's trap.

The Whimsicals: A Crazy Christian Collection

Paperback – January 13, 2017

Mr. Bohemian (Author)

A congregation of comedy and curiosity to cackle and confuse Christians and all. This play is a piece of three parts. No angels were harmed in the making of this production. No demons were flattered in the making of this production.

Angel Incorporated: Your guardian angel is tracking your reward points. Do you have enough for a miracle? The angels of Angelix watch over mortals from their computer. From there they may provide their assigned mortal with what they need, but not often what they want. Is managing mankind not your nine to five? The demons of Daemonix are always accepting applications.

The Guilty Gardener: Calling the case of The Children of The Garden versus Sylmalice. The prosecution states that Angel Sylmalice trailed the girl Eve into biting the tree of treachery. The defense argues that ever since "the exeunt" of Lucifer, angels have been actively prejudice to demons. Therefore, Angel Sylmalice is innocent by reason of "authenticity", with mental collapse triggered by systematic social suppression. Angel 12 is on the case.

Kitty Kloud 9: You are now kruising on Kitty Kloud 9: Where Pets Get Picky! While on the show, angel parents possess the chance to chat with their pets. Are your dog and kitty kaught in a furball? Book Review of...

The Whimsicals: A Crazy Christian Collection

Image result for 5 star book review

(5 out of 5 stars)

Good morning angels!

I just loved it!

Reading this on my flight, I found myself just pulled into the going-on very easily. The set direction gives you just enough direction to allow your imagination to fill in the rest. Mr Bohemian did a good job telling a story that most people don't attempt to write about. The pace of the stories are all done very well -- faced paced enough to keep you interested, slowing only enough for you to understand the full intention and emotion of the situation being demonstrated. .

The author did a good job painting the picture of the goings on of heaven from the angels perspective while using a common place setting (an office) to allow the reader to follow along. I felt this allowed the reader to relax and enjoy the book instead of using a more scared image of heaven (think King James/Michelangelo painting) -- genius.

I would love to see this as a live play, I feel that would just bring it to life even more. I'd happily be in the first row!
