Sexual violence is a significant problem in the United States. Sexual violence refers to "sexual activity where consent is not obtained or not given freely." This form of violence is both a public health and human rights problem; causing both short- and long-term consequences on a women's physical, mental, and sexual and reproductive health.
Sexual violence can occurs in the context of an intimate partnership, within one's family or community structure, or during times of national/political conflict, it is a deeply violating and painful experience for the survivor.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) happens when a bump, blow, jolt, or other head injury causes damage to the brain. Every year, millions of people in the U.S. suffer brain injuries. More than half are bad enough that people must go to the hospital. The worst injuries can lead to permanent brain damage or death. Half of all TBIs are from motor vehicle accidents. Military personnel in combat zones are also at risk.
