Can Pain Medication Be Harmful?

For many suffering with acute and chronic pain the doctor will prescribe opiates (such as Vicodin, morphine, heroin, and codeine). These medications modify a person's sensation to pain, by causing a sense of joy and euphoria via the pleasure centers of the brain.  Because of that, your doctor may need to adjust your medication.  Adjustments will be made as your condition changes up or down. In most cases, when your medication is taken as directed they are safe and rarely lead to dependency.

When abuse of medication occurs, physical dependence to the opiate is extremely likely.  Attempts to reduce or quit the medication suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, nausea joint and muscle pain.  Contact your doctor immediately of this occurs.

Are you abusing or misusing your medication?  Answer the following:

  • Have you considered or do you by medication from others?
  • Have you attempted or wish to purchase the medication from the internet where lenient requirements are in place?
  • In the past 12 months have you used your pain medication in amounts other than those required?

If you answered yes, please take a moment to speak with your doctor about the risks.

6 Ways Social Security Will Change in 2013

Including in being a Christian Life Coach, you always want your clients to be aware of the current changes to anything that may affect them - long or short term. Considering the busy schedule of most people, this article may has slipped your review:

Social Security recipients will get slightly bigger checks in 2013. The Social Security Administration also recently announced several other ways the program will be tweaked in the coming year. Here's a look at the Social Security changes workers and retirees will experience next year:
Bigger monthly payments. Social Security payments will increase by 1.7 percent in 2013. That's considerably less than the 3.6 percent cost of living adjustment retirees received in 2012. Social Security payments are adjusted each year to reflect inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers. Previous inflation adjustments have ranged from zero in 2010 and 2011 to 14.3 percent in 1980. The average Social Security check is expected to increase by $21 as a result of the change from $1,240 before the cost of living adjustment to $1,261 after. Couples will see their benefit payments grow from an average of $2,014 to $2,048.

Payroll tax cut scheduled to expire. Workers will pay 6.2 percent of their income into the Social Security system in 2013, up from 4.2 percent in 2012. The temporary payroll tax cut expires at the end of December 2012 under current law.

Higher Social Security tax cap. The maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security taxes will be $113,700 in 2013, up from $110,100 in 2012. Approximately 10 million people will pay higher taxes as a result of the increase in the taxable maximum.

Increased earnings limit. Retirees who work and collect Social Security benefits at the same time will be able to earn $480 more next year before any portion of their Social Security payment will be withheld. Social Security recipients who are younger than their full retirement age (66 for those born between 1943 and 1954) can earn up to $15,120 in 2013, after which $1 of every $2 earned will be temporarily withheld from their Social Security payments. For retirees who turn 66 in 2013, the limit will be $40,080, after which $1 of every $3 earned will be withheld. Once you turn your full retirement age you can earn any amount without penalty and collect Social Security benefits at the same time. At your full retirement age your monthly payments will also be adjusted to reflect any benefits that were withheld and your continued earnings.

Maximum possible benefit grows. The maximum possible Social Security benefit for a worker who begins collecting benefits at their full retirement age will be $2,533 in 2013, up from $2,513 per month in 2012.

Paper checks will end. The U.S. Treasury will stop mailing paper checks to Social Security beneficiaries on March 1, 2013. All federal benefit recipients must then receive their payments via direct deposit to a bank or credit union account or loaded onto a Direct Express Debit MasterCard. Retirees who do not choose an electronic payment option by March 1 will receive their payments loaded onto a pre-paid debit card. Most people already receive their benefit payments electronically, and new Social Security recipients have been required to choose an electronic payment option since 2011.

Ga. Man Shaves Head to Support Wife, Finds His Own Cancer

When Dolly Stringer was diagnosed with breast cancer in April, she decided to take control and shave her head before she began chemotherapy.

Now, the Moultrie, Ga., woman believes she got cancer for a reason: to save her husband's life.
To show solidarity with Stringer, her husband, Bud, decided to shave his head. His family members were curious about the black patch on his newly-shaved pate.

"And I said 'you know, I'm sure that's a birthmark,' but I didn't realize I had one so I called my mom and she said 'no, it's not a birthmark, you didn't have one,'" Bud Stringer told ABC News in an interview on Monday.

He decided it was a mole, but a biopsy proved him wrong: it was stage three malignant melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer.

The Stringers, who have a son who's 12 and another who's 10, were stunned. They had never had any health problems before.

"I was just really in shock and Bud was, too … and I was just devastated, because it's one thing to have it yourself, that I could handle, but to know that Bud was going to have to go through what I was going through, and worse?" Dolly, 47, said.

Dolly had had several surgeries since her stage three breast cancer diagnosis, and completed her eighth - and final round - of chemotherapy last week. She is preparing to start six and a half weeks of radiation treatment.

Bud's treatment will be more intense. Since his cancer is so aggressive, his treatment will have to be as well. Diagnosed in August, he's already had two extensive surgeries, and is preparing to start a year of chemotherapy. Bud said he'll have chemotherapy five days a week for the first month, and will do self-injections of chemo for 11 months after that.

Despite their troubles, the two - married for nearly 20 years - are upbeat.

"The surgeons down at Moffitt (Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla.), they all feel very positive about the eventual outcome, that it will be very good," Bud said.

Dolly's prognosis is also good. She said her doctor told her she had a "garden-variety" type of cancer. She believes her illness has a greater purpose.

"I now know that I had to have that to save Bud's life, because he would have been - the doctor told me that I would have been burying him probably by Christmas" if the melanoma hadn't been diagnosed and treated, she said, adding, "We just have so, so much to be thankful for."
Bud, 48, agreed.

"I'm not a Bible-thumper, I am a Christian, but I really feel like God's hand shaved my head. I really do … If Dolly had not lost her hair - or chosen to shave her head - I never would have found this … ," he said.

Dolly said when Bud was initially diagnosed she grew very worried. He runs a small business, Rose City Glass in Thomasville, Ga., and since she was sick, he was the primary breadwinner for the family. Dolly is a therapist for an addiction hospital, and although she has health insurance through her job, she has had to work less because of her treatment.

But the Stringers were not without support.

After Bud's diagnosis, "People started coming out of the woodwork," Dolly said.
Those supporters have done the couple's lawn, helped clothe their children, and even sent food for their dogs.

Over the weekend, members of the pair's church organized a 5K run, expecting to raise about $5,000. They took in more than $40,000, Dolly said. The church, First Presbyterian of Moultrie, continues to accept donations for the Stringers.

The generosity has been overwhelming, and Dolly said it has brought her some peace.
"I could see very quickly that our needs were going to be provided for … We're going to be okay, the children are going to be okay," she said. "It's just been amazing. I mean every day we just we just find ourselves going 'thank you,' and it just doesn't feel like enough."

The Stringers want to raise awareness about cancer, particularly about melanoma. Prior to his diagnosis, Bud's head had been itching, Dolly said. She checked his head, but he had very dark hair, so she didn't see anything, she said.

"What we love … is that people are saying 'I went and got a mammogram because of this and 'I went to get a head-to-toe check with my dermatologist.'

"We even had a man that shaved his head just because he wanted to make sure," she said.

Thomas Jefferson Prayer

Almighty God,
Who has given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech Thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of Thy favor and glad to do Thy will.
Bless our land with honorable ministry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way.
Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people, the multitude brought hither our of many kindreds and tongues.  Endow with Thy spirit of wisdom those whom in Thy name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, ant that through obedience to Thy law, we may show forth Thy praise among the nations of the earth.
In time of prosperity fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in Thee to fail; all of which we ask through Jesus Christ of Lord.  Amen.

Day 9 (40 days of Prayer - Election)

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, But the prayer of the upright is His delight.  Proverbs 15:8

Father,
Your Word says that if we delight ourselves in You, You will give us the desires of our hearts (Psalm 37:4). Please direct our paths in Your ways everlasting so that Your will becomes our desire; so that Your way becomes our delight.  Fill us with the power of Your presence and bind us together as a people of one nation under God.  And through each day, to You be the glory for all goodness and blessings that come our way.

Day 8 (40 Days of prayer - Election)

Father,
Give us Your guidance and strength as we honestly confess our sins to You and to one another. And give us compassionate hearts as we pray for each other and hour leaders across the country and the world.  Rid us of judgement, condemnation, and pride, and fill s with a spirit of grace, mercy and love. John 15:7-8

Lord,
We as a people have become self-absorbed and busy with activities that bring temporal value. Help us turn our hearts back to You and Your word so our nation will bear the fruit of righteousness and be set above all other nations! Strengthen us with the power of Your Spirit in our inner being as we strive to abide in You and to continue in faith that You will do more for us then we could ever imagine.

Day 6 (40 days of Prayer - Election)

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even until the end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20

Lord,
You have commanded us to make disciples of all nations-may we begin within our own hearts! You are the way, the truth, and the life, and we thank You for Your promise to be with us always.  Give us sincerity of heart and unfailing courage  to spread this good news, whether with our neighbors across the street or with lost souls across the earth.  We trust in You to work through us-without You we can do nothing!

40 Days of Prayer for the Election

2012 Election

Angela Chester Ministries and New Life Pastoral Counseling are joining with many other Christian organizations and ministries calling for 40 Days of Prayer beginning Sept. 28 – Nov. 6 ending just before the election.  America is in a very curious geo-political and economic crisis and we must pray for our Country once more.

The election on November 6, 2012 for the office of President is the day of decision for America. Let us take to prayer and action.

Everyday a prayer will be posted. Please feel free to post your own prayer or simply offer an 'amen.'

Bad Choices, Bad Habits

A habit is any action that we have performed so often that it becomes almost an involuntary response. If we consider this habit to be undesirable then we may label it a "bad habit." People spend countless hours and dollars each year attempting to break these bad habits and often do not have any success. Why? Because there is no magic bullet. Change is hard work and there is no short cut to achieving it. The steps a person needs to take, however, can be very simply outlined. To effect a change in habits, one needs to bring the action back into the realm of consciousness and regain the ability to make choices.

What's the Payoff?
The first step in breaking a bad habit is to look at why you find this action so compelling. In other words, what's the payoff for doing this seemingly negative thing? Since you've already classified this as a "bad" habit you may be tempted to say there isn't one. But look closer. There is always a payoff. Let's say your bad habit is yelling at your kids. What's in it for you? You let off some steam and feel a little better for the moment. Or you have a bad habit of leaving the dishes unwashed? The payoff could be that you get to spend more time on the Internet!

What's the Trade Off

Next, take a look at the trade off. What is it that you are losing by exercising your habit? This step should be easier. Just think why it is that you consider it a bad habit in the first place. Yelling at your kids is a bad habit because it leaves everybody feeling tense and tears down your children's self-esteem. You are trading a temporary release of tension for the emotional health of your children. Leaving the dishes undone is a bad habit because your kitchen is a smelly mess. To have more Internet time you are trading off having a pleasant living environment. When you look at it that way it doesn't seem like you are making very wise choices, does it? There has to be a better way.
Time to Make a Choice!

Now that you've weighed both sides of the issue--your payoff and your tradeoff--it's time to make a choice. It's no longer an involuntary act because now you know that you are making a choice every time you perform this action. You are choosing what you value more: the payoff or the tradeoff! Each time you start to do whatever the bad habit is now you have to actively choose. Which do you value more? Do you value more the relief you get by yelling at your kids or do you value their emotional well-being? Do you value more having more Internet time or having a pleasant place to live?
Substituting Better Behaviors

The whole reason you formed your habits in the first place is that they filled a need. You had tension that needed relief or you had a desire to surf the Net. As you break the old patterns you still need a way to fulfill these needs. You will be not only making an active choice to not do the old action you will also be making a choice to perform a better, alternative action in its place. Instead of yelling at your kids you might decide to go for a run every time you are feeling tense. Instead of letting dirty dishes pile up you may decide to use paper plates when you are eating alone. What the new habit is that you substitute isn't so important as whether you feel good about the choices you have made. After all, the reason you consider it a bad habit is because it leaves you feeling bad about yourself.
I t's Up to You

By now you should realize that the only way to continue with a bad habit for very long is to sink back into denial of why you are doing it in the first place. Each time you begin to resume your old patterns the thought will pass through your mind that you are trading X for Y each time you perform that action. You will be forced to make a choice, whether good for bad, about continuing your habit. What choices will you make? The one that makes you feel bad about yourself or the one that makes you feel good? It's up to you.

Black Americans and Government Dependency

Kenneth Durden: "Rep. Joe Walsh Is Right About Black Americans & Government Dependency"

Rep. Joe Walsh
I don't see the big fuss here either, because Rep. Walsh is telling the truth. The fact remains that most African Americans are dependent on the government largesse in some form: working for the government (22%), welfare (12%), or Social Security/disability benefits (24%). That means that almost 60% fall into Rep. Walsh's category. The only change that I'd have made is to add that the Democratic Party's goal is increasingly for everyone — across race — to revel in envy politics and be dependent on government. Anyway, Mr. Durden, a libertarian-conservative blogger, opines about the controversy: "Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) is catching hell for saying that Democrats want Hispanics dependent on government 'like black people.' It's easy to be offended by what Walsh said, but in a way, he's right. Okay, pick up your chin off the floor. While there may be some Democrats and leftists/Socialists who believe in a simple safety net, there are many others who want an expansive welfare state so they can maintain power. ALL politicians (right and left) know that by promising more, they can maintain their power."

He continues his commentary: "Democrats know they have the loyalty of Fido when it comes to black people. They need to tap into the largest minority group. If Hispanic/Latino people embrace the notion of 3-jobs-or-whatever-it-takes like black people used to do, then Democrats can offer them little. Make a man a victim, then pretend to be his hero. You have his loyalty."

Communication is one of the most discussed issues that affect couples and families.  After reading the above article -- how do you feel? How does truth, communication and openness play a role in this?

Why Christians Go Postal Over Facebook, Jay-Z, Yoga, Avatar, and Culture in General

Many times Counselors forget to go out into the "world" via the internet and see what others are doing. We are so busy that we can inadvertently live in a bubble. I am one of those people who try to get out and see what is going on around me.

With that said, I came across this wonderful article that I would love to share with you. Enjoy!

Why Christians Go Postal Over Facebook, Jay-Z, Yoga, Avatar, and Culture in General

It was only last week that the Washington Post asked for my opinion on the New Jersey pastor calling for Christians to stop using Facebook. Had I known what would erupt this week, I might have agreed with him.

The big idea of my Post blog was that Facebook doesn’t cause adultery, people do. Calling for a boycott of Facebook is not the answer because the issue is the heart. Even if someone doesn’t commit adultery because of Facebook, if that sin remains in their heart, they will find another way to act upon it. Sadly, after the story broke, it was revealed that the pastor protesting against Facebook was, in fact, guilty of prior adultery, along with his wife. Of course, their adultery had nothing to do with Facebook, according to the news reports. So, while I pray for the couple to get beyond whatever may be troubling their marriage by God’s grace, it simply confirmed my big idea that sinners are ultimately responsible for sin.

Facebook, like many technologies and cultural phenomena, is an opportunity for my heart and the hearts of others you and I interact with to be revealed and transformed. Funny that this week, a simple comment I made appreciating the talent of Jay-Z generated hundreds and hundreds of comments across multiple threads on my Facebook page. Compare that to nineteen comments on my post regarding a news article about the Christian who is being raped, beaten, and tortured for his faith and needs some people to push for his freedom.

Common Types of Anxiety Disorders

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)
Social anxiety disorder (SAD), also known as social phobia, is an anxiety disorder characterized by intense fear in social situations causing considerable distress and impaired ability to function in at least some part of daily life. Sure, many people get nervous when giving a speech or during an interview, but social  anxiety disorder or social phobia is more than just shyness or occasional nerves.  SAD is one of the most common mental disorders with up to 13% of the general population experiencing symptoms at some point in their life.

The difference between shyness and SAD relates to the severity and persistence of the symptoms that are experienced. Those who suffer, experience overwhelming anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations. They have an intense fear of being watched and judged by others, making work, school, and other ordinary activities very difficult. Those dealing with SAD, many times realize their fears are excessive or unreasonable, but are unable to overcome them.

If left untreated, this can become severe. In severe cases, social situations are avoided at all costs.

Panic Disorder
Individuals with panic disorder have repeated, unexpected attacks of intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms such as sweating, chest pain, heart palpitations, or a feeling of choking. Sufferers of panic attacks often report a fear or sense of dying, "going crazy," or experiencing a heart attack or "flashing vision," feeling faint or nauseated, a numb sensation throughout the body, heavy breathing (and almost always, hyperventilation), or losing control of themselves. Some people also suffer from tunnel vision, mostly due to blood flow leaving the head to more critical parts of the body in defense. These feelings may provoke a strong urge to escape or flee the place where the attack began (a consequence of the sympathetic "fight-or-flight response").

People who have full-blown, repeated panic attacks can become very disabled by their condition and should seek treatment before they start to avoid places or situations where panic attacks have occurred in the past.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
PTSD is an anxiety disorder that can develop following a traumatic or life-threatening event such as war, the unexpected death of a loved one, rape, assault, a plane crash or a natural disaster.  The normal response to any trauma is shock, however, over time these symptoms lessen. With PTSD, you remain in this heightened state of mental shock and symptoms worsen, instead of the normal gradual decrease in symptoms.

Diagnostic symptoms for PTSD include re-experiencing the original trauma through flashbacks or nightmares, avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma, and increased arousal—such as difficulty falling or staying asleep and  anger.

Symptoms of PTSD can be severe and cause significant problems at home, work, or other areas of life.  With treatment, PTSD can be dealt with.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear, or worry, by repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing the associated anxiety, or by a combination of such obsessions and compulsions. Symptoms of the disorder include excessive washing or cleaning; repeated checking; extreme hoarding; preoccupation with sexual, violent or religious thoughts; aversion to particular numbers; and nervous rituals, such as opening and closing a door a certain number of times before entering or leaving a room.

Individuals with OCD often recognize their obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors as irrational, but still feel unable to resist them. It's normal, on occasion, to double-check if the stove is on, or to be concerned about the well-being of a loved one. But if these thoughts or behaviors become excessive and begin to keep a person from performing the responsibilities necessary to lead a normal life, seeking professional help is recommended.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable and often irrational worry about everyday things that is disproportionate to the actual source of worry. Individuals typically anticipate disaster, and are overly concerned about matters such as health issues, money, death, family problems, friend problems, relationship problems or work difficulties. This excessive worry often interferes with daily function.

This type of constant anxiety takes a physical toll causing body aches, poor sleep patterns and constant exhaustion.

What is Anxiety Disorder?

Let’s face it, our society has everyone in a tizzy. We want everything faster, quicker, now and right now!  With stress levels so high, more and more cases of anxiety related issues are being diagnosed. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, anxiety disorders affect 40 million Americans yearly. Unlike the anxiety caused by a single stressful event, anxiety disorders last 6 months or more and can get worse if not treated.

So what is anxiety or anxiety disorder?

Anxiety is a normal, natural and sometimes necessary emotion. It’s an adaptive response to stress and danger. Anxiety helps people to cope with a tense situation and can even motivate us to work harder. In some cases, it makes us focus on solving an important problem or coming up with a solution. In general, it helps us manage many challenges in our daily lives.

For some, anxiety can become excessive, irrational and even debilitating. However, when anxiety interferes with our ability to function in daily life it may be due to a medical condition called anxiety disorder. When worries and fears prevent you from living life the way you'd like, or from being in a loving healthy relationship,  you should consider contacting a counselor or  anxiety therapist for a complete evaluation.

Anxiety Disorder Symptoms

Each person suffering from anxiety disorder has unique symptoms, however a common theme involves excessive anxiety, irrational fear and dread. Examples of anxiety symptoms include:

•    Chest pain or Heart Palpitations
•    An inability to be still and calm
•    Feelings of panic, fear, and nervousness
•    Uncontrollable, obsessive thinking
•    Repeated thoughts of traumatic events
•    Nightmares, problems sleeping
•    Excessive sweating or numbness in the hands or feet
•    Shortness of breath, hyperventilation
•    Dry mouth, Nausea, Dizziness

Before a treatment can be administered, a patient will need to be evaluated by a physician to determine if the symptoms of concern are caused by an anxiety disorder or another medical condition.

Prayer for Our Nation

Good morning, God. Good morning, Jesus. Good morning, Holy Ghost. Thank You for this day which You have made. We will rejoice with praise and thanksgiving and be glad in it. Thank You, God for all that You have done for us, America, Washington, DC. Thank You for all that You are doing right now. Thank You for all that You are going to do for us. Thank You for hearing our cries and answering our prayers. We count all things that are not as though they are, according to You Word. In Jesus' Name.

Father, teach us to do Your will. Bring all the devices of the devil to nought everywhere. Make the devices of men of none effect. Let the wicked be snared in the work of his own hands and sunk down in the pit that they made. Cover us, Lord, with the Blood of Jesus which cleanses from all sin and destroys all the works of the devil. Abide with us, abide in us. In Jesus' name.

God, while we are in this Easter season, give us understanding of what Jesus did for us and why He did it. We had a debt that we could not pay, the penalty for sin is death. Jesus paid that debt for us because that was the will of His Father. God's will for us is not to perish, but, have everlasting life. Help us,God, fix our hearts. Help us to humble ourselves, pray with a sincere heart and accept Jesus as our Savior and Lord and follow Him.

Lord, let "in God we trust" reign in our hearts and in our land again. Send Your love, joy & peace, and praise with thanksgiving throughout our land, America, Washington, DC. Bring America back to her first love, back to You. Thank You for blessing and keeping all the women and men in all branches of our Armed Forces. Thank You, Lord, for keeping us in Your divine care. In Jesus' Name we pray. Thank God. Amen and amen.

One L. Goh, Oikos University gunman, kills 7 people "execution-style," say police

(Credit: AP Photo/Noah Berger)

(CBS/AP) OAKLAND, Calif. - Authorities say that within one hour Monday, a 43-year-old former student named One L. Goh walked into Oikos University and began a shooting rampage that left seven people dead and three wounded, trapping some in the building and forcing others to flee for their lives.

It was an "extremely chaotic scene," police Chief Howard Jordan said of the deadliest campus shooting in five years.

The chief said Tuesday that Goh killed his seven victims execution-style.

The shooter walked into the University's single-story building, took a receptionist hostage and went looking for a particular female administrator, Jordan told CNN.

One witness said Goh told students: "Get in line and I'm going to kill you all."
